Gehry - Disney Concert Hall - LA - Interview

Attached here is a short interview where Frank Gehry talks about architecture in a simple manner. The full interview is here. It is an enjoyable and accessible dialogue for architects, and more importantly, for non-architects. A blinding challenge for the profession (in Western Australia especially) is representing value in something that is intangible. Why would one want to pay for something that doesn’t materialise for years? This may be a byproduct of consumerism.

With reference to the Disney Concery Hall in LA, Gehry talks about architecture’s positive influence, beauty and the relationship to its physical manifestation. He mentions the US$5,000,000 price tag for the psychological effect produced by the timber in the auditorium. He also talks of the fundamental principles of planning a theatre, something that in section remains fundamentally the same as it has always been.

“That’s[auditorium] a box, and on either side of the box are toilets and stairs, and you gotta join those toilets and stairs with a foyer. That’s the plan”
